Washington: State Minimum Wage Increases
On September 30, 2026, Washington’s Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) announced that the statewide minimum wage will increase to $17.73 per hour for most workers, effective January 1, 2027 (up from $17.13 in 2026). The minimum wage for 14-and 15-year-old workers will be $15.07 an hour, also effective January 1, 2027. L&I uses a multiplier of the state minimum wage to calculate the minimum salary for exempt executive, administrative, and professional workers. In 2026, the multiplier was the same (2.25 times the minimum wage) for both large employers (51 or more employees) and small employers (up to 50 employees), but the multiplier is scheduled to increase only for large employers in 2027. Starting January 1, 2027, large employers must pay exempt workers 2.5 times the minimum wage, meaning an employee must earn at least $1,773.00 a week ($92,196.00 a year) to be exempt from receiving overtime pay. For small employers, the multiplier will stay at 2.25 times the minimum wage for 2027, meaning an exempt employee must earn at least $1,595.70 a week ($82,976.40 a year) for a small employer to avoid paying the worker overtime. The multiplier is not scheduled to go up for small employers until 2028. The same rules allow exempt computer professionals to be paid an hourly rate rather than a minimum salary. That hourly rate is 3.5 times the minimum wage, regardless of employer size. In 2027, the hourly rate for exempt computer professionals will be $62.06, which is $2.10 more than in 2026. Additional rules apply to rideshare drivers. Many local governments in Washington impose different or higher minimum wages, so employers should ensure their payroll practices are up-to-date with the applicable rates in locations where employees perform work.
