U.S. Releases New COVID-19 Travel Rules for Vaccination and Testing

On October 25, 2021, the Biden Administration announced new COVID-19 related rules for travelers entering or departing the United States. Specifically, travelers coming to the U.S. must have proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 and a recent negative test to be permitted entry to the country, with narrow exemptions.

U.S. citizens and residents returning to the country from abroad who have not been vaccinated must obtain a negative COVID-19 test within a day of their flight. Vaccinated individuals who have had a negative test in the prior 72 hours may board flights as long as they share contact tracing information. “Vaccinated” means individuals who received vaccines authorized by the Food and Drug Administration or those who possess an Emergency Use listing from the World Health Organization.

Unvaccinated foreigners will generally be barred entry. Individuals departing from a country considered to have insufficient vaccination supplies may be granted an exception, provided the individual submits proof of negative COVID-19 testing within one day of their flight.
